How do I apply for the 1G (graduate) visa?

You can only apply for your 1G visa after:

Note: If you exit your programme with a Postgraduate Diploma, you can apply for the 1G visa approximately 4 weeks after final results are released (March, July, November). Please see How do I exit with a postgraduate award for more information. 

What are the eligibility requirements?

To apply for a 1G visa, you must:

  • Be living in Ireland
  • Hold a valid IRP card
  • Have completed a Level 8 or Level 9 qualification
  • Apply within 6 months of award notification
  • Not exceed:
    • 7 years on Stamp 2, or
    • 8 years total on Stamp 2 + Stamp 1G

What documents do I need?

1. Passport:

The biometric page of your current valid passport(s). This is the page that shows your photograph, passport number and date of birth.

2. Current IRP card: 

The front and back of your current IRP card (this is the credit-card sized plastic card you received when you last registered your permission).

3. Proof you successfully completed your third level course:

NCI Graduate Visa Letter* OR QQI Parchment

*The NCI Graduate Visa Letter can be requested on NCI360 via the student letter hub once final results have been published.
4. Private Medical Insurance
5. €300 to pay by credit/debit card

Note: Transcripts are not required for 1G Visa applications. Transcripts are issued to students by the Exams team.  Please read this article for information on how to receive your transcript.

How do I apply?

You must apply for the Stamp 1G through the application portal.

1. Select Registration and Registrations Renewal

2. Choose Registration Renewal

3. Complete the application form (Select Stamp 1G , or 1A if applicable, under Immigration Permission/Permission type for renewal )

4. Upload required documents and pay the €300 fee

5. Submit uploading all supporting documents, pay the fee and submit your application

What are the processing times?

(As of May 2026)
  • Application processing: 12–14 weeks
  • IRP card delivery: additional 2–3 weeks

Employment Concerns During Processing:

If a student’s IRP card expires while their renewal application is still being processed, this can understandably raise concerns about their right to work. Please note that Immigration Service Delivery has confirmed that students can continue working under their existing permission while their renewal is in progress.

Students and employers can refer this notice to employers regarding employees awaiting renewal of their IRP Card  (Updated May 2026).

How long is 1G visa valid for?

Level 8 graduates: typically eligible for 12 months
 
Level 9 graduates: initial 12 months + extension for a further 12 months, if:
  • You provide evidence of actively seeking graduate-level employment
  • You remain within the 8-year overall limit
Examples of acceptable evidence:
  • Job applications
  • Interview attendance
  • Registration with recruitment agencies

Can I apply for a 1G visa again after completing another qualification?

If you previously held a 1G visa:
  • You may be eligible again if you complete a higher qualification (e.g. Level 9 after Level 8) - This can grant an additional 12 months
  • You can access the 1G programme a maximum of two times
  • Total time on Stamp 2 + 1G must not exceed 8 years
