1. Purpose
This policy outlines the regulations and penalties associated with the late submission of coursework at the National College of Ireland (NCI). It ensures fairness and consistency across all programmes and ensures the ongoing integrity of the assessment process.
Timely submission of coursework is an essential requirement of academic study. This policy also clarifies the process for handling late submissions, including when marks may or may not be awarded.
2. Scope
This policy students at NCI, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It applies to all forms of coursework and continuous assessment.
This policy will be applied consistently across all programmes and disciplines. No alternative penalty scheme may be substituted unless explicitly approved by Academic Council via a special regulation listed in the QQI approved Programme validation document or certificate of validation.
All previously existing late submission penalty procedures are superseded by this policy upon its effective date.
3. Late Submission Penalties
3.1 Standard Penalties
- Where coursework is submitted late without approved extenuating circumstances:
- A penalty of 5% of the awarded mark per calendar day (24 hours) will be applied, up to a maximum of 100% deduction.
- Penalties apply only to the specific item of coursework that is late, not to the overall module grade.
3.2 Final Submission
- No coursework will be accepted after the date of the relevant Examination Board.
- Any coursework submitted after this date will be treated as a non-submission, and a mark of zero.
- For students who have secured an extension in accordance with the Extension of Coursework Policy, the late penalty will apply from when the extension submission date expires.
3.3 Appeals
- Students have the right to appeal the application of late penalties. Appeals must be made through the Office of the Registrar via registrarsoffice@ncirl.ie
