Netiquette Guidelines for Blended and Online Learners at NCI
At National College of Ireland (NCI), we aim to create a respectful, inclusive, and supportive online learning environment. Whether you are studying in blended or fully online mode, these Netiquette Guidelines will help you communicate effectively and participate professionally. They reflect NCI's commitment to respectful digital conduct, in line with the Student Policy on the Prevention of Bullying and Harassment.
Online learning can sometimes feel isolating or overwhelming. Don’t be afraid to speak up if you’re struggling; self-advocacy is important. Your Programme Coordinators, Programme Directors, and Student Services are there to support you, so familiarise yourself with these services and reach out when needed. Supporting your classmates and staying connected with your learning community can make all the difference.
Be Respectful and Inclusive
- Use polite and respectful language in all interactions.
- Avoid using all caps (which can seem like shouting) or inappropriate emojis.
- Respect differences in culture, background, and opinion.
Communicate Thoughtfully
- Think before you post or reply; keep messages relevant, clear, and concise.
- Be professional in tone, even in casual chats.
- Be mindful; allow others time to speak or share ideas.
- Don’t share personal details of others without their permission.
Engage Responsibly in Class Activities
- Attend live classes on time and stay focused during sessions.
- When your lecturer asks a question, try to respond; even a quick comment in the chat helps keep the session interactive and gives them valuable feedback.
- Mute your microphone when not speaking and use the raise hand/chat functions respectfully.
- Participate actively in group work and discussions.
Use Moodle and Teams Effectively
- Moodle is your main platform for course content, assignments, announcements, and deadlines. Log in regularly and check for updates.
-
Microsoft Teams is used for live classes, meetings, and collaboration. Communication in these live sessions should follow the lead of your lecturer. However, some general expectations apply to everyone:
- Join on time and come prepared.
- Students should follow the lecturer's directions regarding when to turn on or off their webcam and microphone during live sessions.
- Keep your microphone muted when not speaking.
- Use the “Raise Hand” or chat function respectfully; avoid interrupting via mic.
- Avoid using the chat for off-topic messages during class.
- Dress appropriately and keep your background distraction-free if using your camera.
- Follow any specific instructions your lecturer gives around participation, group work, or recording.
- When your lecturer asks, “Are there any questions?” take a moment to reflect; don’t be afraid to speak up or use the chat. If you’re unsure, it’s likely someone else is too.
- Lecturers will set the tone and structure for each class. Respecting their direction helps ensure a smooth and inclusive learning experience for everyone.
Please be considerate of everyone's time and workload. While Teams is great for quick questions during live sessions, for queries outside of class time, email is generally the best way to ensure your query gets the attention it deserves.
- Some staff may prefer/accept communication via Teams; it is always best to ask first.
- Avoid sending repeated messages; if a staff member has not had time to respond to your query please be patient and they will reply asap.
Maintain Academic Integrity
- Complete your own work and avoid plagiarism.
- Cite any sources you use appropriately.
- Use AI tools responsibly and only where permitted by your lecturer.
Protect Digital Wellbeing
- Use your NCI email and login details securely—don’t share passwords.
- Log out of shared devices after use.
- Report technical or conduct concerns to your lecturer or support staff promptly.
